SaniChoice allows the user to identify locally appropriate sanitation system options by using three different types of criteria: Preconditions, Appropriateness Criteria, and Evaluation Criteria. Additionally, the user can exclude technologies and prioritise preferred sanitation templates.

Preconditions

In SaniChoice, you have the option to narrow down the potential sanitation technologies by defining the development phase (acute, stabilisation, recovery or development phase) and by fixing set infrastructure.

You can also just ignore these preconditions if you do not know how what information to provide.

Appropriateness Criteria

SaniChoice offers you to choose from almost 30 appropriateness criteria including geo-physical, technical, socio-cultural, legal as well as criteria concerning capacity and management, and 5 criteria specific to the humanitarian setting. We recommend using a limited number of criteria (e.g. three to fifteen), meaning only using those that are most important.

Technology Appropriateness Scores

The Technology Appropriateness Score (TAS) is the result of evaluating the appropriateness criteria for a specific technology in comparison to the case settings.

It expresses the degree to which a technology is appropriate for the case. It is quantified by defining for each criteria a pair of technology and case attribute. Each attribute is compared individually resulting in an attribute score between 0% match (not appropriate) and 100% match (fully appropriate). The aggregation of all attribute appropriateness scores, using a geometric mean, results in the technology appropriateness score for the technology and the given case. The score expresses the confidence in how appropriate the technology is between o and 100%.

Application Case

Application cases are different zones within a city for which appropriate and contextualised sanitation technologies and systems must be identified. They can be defined by physical, socio-demographic or political boundaries and are characterised by geo-physical, technical, socio-cultural, legal, financial as well as criteria concerning capacity and management.
